BEAR

TALES

Once upon a time,
there was a young bear
who was very homesick and lonely.
He had been taken from his
home by humans to another place to live.

He wandered and wandered and,
after a very long time,
he finally saw something familiar.
He was amazed. He was home at last.
This made him very happy!

What actually happened?
He used his "compass sense"
to find his way home.
No one knows exactly how bears can do this.
It's believed they have a mental map
that guides them back home.

The little bear is much older now.
He's grown to be a large bear and is known as "Mr. Bear"
to all the other bears.

But he's still lonely and searches
everywhere for a nice lady bear
to be good company
and a good friend.
One day, he sees the cutest
little lady bear
he's ever seen in his whole life!

At last, he has a friend
and she's real good company, too!
Soon they become
Mr. and Mrs. Bear.
It's nearing winter and
they have lots of work to do.
They must eat and eat and eat.
They must gain lots of weight
and put on lots of fat to be
ready for hibernation.

What is Hibernation?
A long winter's nap!
Bears that live in cold climates
"hibernate".
Starting in early October,
they sleep for about
six months.
They go to sleep in a cave
and don't wake up until spring.
God made bears this way
so they won't starve
and freeze during the winter.
It gets very cold and
nothing grows for them to eat.

When Mr. & Mrs. Bear were snuggled down
in their cozy little cave,
Mrs. Bear whispered
into Mr. Bear's ear,
"We're going to be
"Mama" and "Papa" Bears,
'cause we're having a "Baby"!

And they lived happily ever after......
